Former Orangery

The orangery is a greenhouse located on the northern boundary of the Princely Garden, behind the City Hall Museum. In the past, the building was used to overwinter non-perennial plants and exotic potted plants from the English style garden. Thus, the desire for potted plants and permanently blooming summer flowers could be met. The potted plants were placed in front of the orangery in summer and could overwinter inside during the cold seasons. Summer flowers were grown on an ongoing basis.

Steuben Stone – commemorative stone at the billiard house

The Steuben Stone was placed as a memorial stone for Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben in 1969. He was the princely court marshal in Hechingen as of 1764. He later reformed the army in North America as Inspector General and contributed to George Washington's victory in the War of Independence against England.

Originally, the stone stood in front of the Villa Eugenia. It was later moved near the White House, where it can be found today.

Anecdote about Steuben:

According to historical records, court marshal Steuben remained connected to Hechingen through a shipment of over 300 trees and shrubs from the New World. The arrival of the shipment however was never confirmed in writing, so that it is uncertain whether the shipment arrived at all or was possibly spoiled during the crossing. There are no specimens in the Princely Garden that can be proven to have come directly from North America. However, it is a nice little story we did not want to withhold from you.
