You are standing in front of the last remaining gate tower of the wall surrounding the town. Eitel Frederick I., Count of Hohenzollern-Hechingen had the Lower Tower built as part of a renewal of the town’s fortification in the late 16th century.

For centuries, until construction of New Street in 1862, traffic into the town had to travel via Staig Street and squeeze through this eye of a needle. Carriages and coaches travelled through a gate that was attached to the tower, the hinges of which remain.

Find out more about the history of this landmark of Hechingen, the guests that stayed here and have a look inside the tower.
