Park maintenance concept according to Albrecht Schaal

In terms of garden history, the Fürstengarten can be classified as a classic English landscape garden. The goal of the maintenance concept is to restore the garden to the state depicted in the 1861 plan.

To this end, Albrecht Schaal has developed 3 guiding lines, as well as 10 guiding ideas and implementation phases.

3 Guiding Lines:

  1. 1. To gradually restore the park’s state of 150 years ago. At this it is advantageous that the basic structure of the park has remained intact despite the lack of maintenance.
  2. 2. Put plants and pathways in the focus of the garden monument preservation efforts. Gardening concerns have priority.
  3. 3. Enrich formerly wooded areas in terms of biodiversity. Appreciation and preservation of old trees. Quality goes before quantity.

10 Guiding Ideas:

  1. 1. In the short term, stop the natural regeneration of ash trees and maples throughout the park.
  2. 2. Remove overgrown wooded areas and convert them into open meadows.
  3. 3. Deliberately clear the views of the Hohenzollern castle and the Feilbach valley.
  4. 4. Continue to enrich existing forest areas in the park with woody plants and perennials.
  5. 5. Reconstruct smaller walking paths that have been lost.
  6. 6. Restore the representative area in front of the villa.
  7. 7.Reintroduce water elements into the park 8. Redesign and unbuild unmotivated maintenance paths and access roads where necessary.
  8. 9. Restore and reconstruct the decayed orangery to preserve the original substance.
  9. 10. Inform visitors about the described measures and the park history.

In the future, the coordination of the Princely Garden's restoration project will be the responsibility of the city's Forestry and Nature Department. It will also arrange for the implementation of the intended measures concerning the park's woody plants. The continuation of the care concept will be carried out in annual sub-steps until 2023.
